Executive Summary

US industrial production (IP) is often a key indicator of Mexican economic growth: unsurprising given that around 60% of Mexico’s maquiladoras (factories that import goods to assemble and then reexporting the assembled product to its country of origin) are located close to the northern border in order to serve the US market. However, a correlation of US and Mexican IP levels shows that there has been a significant divergence in trend between the two over the past ten years. Over the five-year period between August 1998 and July 2003, the correlation between US and Mexican IP (measured by % change year-onyear (y-o-y) on a 12mma) was very high, as reflected by an adjusted R-squared score of 0.93. However, this dropped to 0.27 for the subsequent five-year period (August 2003 - July 2008), showing a clear break in trend between the two indicators.

This report is being written at a time when the global financial crisis – which arose as a result of the evaporation of inter-bank liquidity – has moved into a new phase. Stock market participants appear – reasonably – to have taken the view that the policy responses taken by governments, central banks and multi-lateral institutions will be sufficient to prevent a total collapse of the global financial system. Instead, stock market participants are focusing on the impact of a near-global recession on the earnings of non-financial companies.
