2009 RFID Business Planning Service Track 1: Product/Service Offerings Volume 2: RFID Readers, Supply-Side Analysis
DETAILED OVERVIEW: VDC Research is pleased to announce the release of its RFID Transponders report: Track 1, Volume 1 of its 2009 RFID Business Planning Service. This market intelligence report provides quantitative and qualitative analyses of global demand for radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders. Data is presented in both units and consumption dollars. RFID transponder revenue shipments and forecasts are segmented by:
Regional market; Vertical market; Form factor; Frequency; Functionality; and Primary distribution channel.
In 2008, the global market for RFID readers reached $600 million, with unit shipments approaching 1.8 million. RFID reader revenue distribution continued to be driven by both the Americas and EMEA regional markets. Over the next 5 years, the EMEA region is expected to account for the largest share of the total global RFID reader market, due largely to the need to support the infrastructure required for high growth applications including: contactless payment, ticketing, ID/government programs, animal tracking, and supply chain management.
Executive Brief: Market Overview The total RFID market grew approximately 30% from 2007, despite the recession accelerating in Q4. Market growth will be in low double digits over the next few years, but it will gradually return to 30%+ growth rates within 5 years. Product mixes and extended refresh cycles are impacting revenue growth: -Increased demand for lower-cost mobile readers and embedded modules as opposed to higher-end stationary readers. -Refresh cycles for installed readers are being extended as end-users focus on refining, scaling, and expanding functionality of their existing infrastructure. HF will remain the leading reader frequency with much of its growth through 2013 to be driven by smartcard applications, commercial services, and the release of the EPC HF standard. It is expected that there will be more EPC UHF units shipped over the next 5 years than any other frequency due the onset of the long awaited rise of EPC UHF in the supply chain (expected to begin in the 2011/2012). Continued convergence with existing AIDC solutions (e.g. scanners, kiosks, mobile computers) and enterprise infrastructure/fixtures is expected to drive much of the module growth over the next 5 years as RFID becomes more core.
Executive Brief: Estimates and Forecasts Over the next 5 years, the EMEA region is expected to account for the largest share of the total global RFID reader market. Although the Americas region has high revenues, it accounts for the lowest overall unit shipments. This is due to an elevated use of higher-priced readers (e.g. Active MW & UHF, EPC UHF) for primary applications such as tolling, RTLS, and supply chain management. Product mixes in the APAC region are currently weighted toward HF and LF devices in support of smartcard and animal tracking applications; however, this is expected to change as applications requiring higher-priced EPC UHF and MW/UHF devices (e.g. supply chain, tolling) begin to gain traction. HF readers are anticipated to maintain an aggressive growth rate in support of a diversity of smartcard applications (e.g. contactless payment, ID, e-Government). Revenues for EPC UHF are expected to contract in 2009 due to: -Drastic budget reductions (up to 75% in some applications) and lower investment in emerging markets. -Uncertainty in the Wal-Mart market due the retailer's announcement of a considerable reduction in RFID noncompliance penalties. LF readers are anticipated to undergo constant, albeit slower growth due to oncoming mandates for animal tracking applications and the evolution of several niche markets (e.g. Read Through Metal).
Executive Brief: Competitive Landscape - Readers The top 8 RFID reader suppliers are either focused on smartcard applications (e.g. security/access control, ID) or active solutions such as RTLS or Tolling areas of use that require either higher volumes or higher-priced devices. No supplier with a strong focus on EPC UHF solutions has ever had more than a 3% global share of the total RFID reader market. This trendis expected to change, however, as the EPC UHF market is poised for growth over the next few years and has a higher AFSP than other passive solutions. Several Asian manufacturers have been steadily gaining share over the past few years. However, it is uncertain whether these Asian manufacturers can maintain this pace as several of the larger APAC programs are winding down and the challenges to succeed begin to mount.
Executive Brief: Strategic Issues & Expectations | Fixed position readers will experience moderate growth over the next 5 years as mobility becomes increasingly important, price sensitivity increases, refresh cycles get extended, and convergence with other AIDC solutions continues. As RFID becomes more pervasive and mature, reader distribution will shift toward the dealer/distributor and direct-to-end user channels (from the VARs/SIs) due to price sensitivity, more experience/comfort with the solution, and the increased ability of the end user to perform technology refreshes/upgrades. Rapid reduction of active transponders will spurn UHF and MW reader sales in a number of mission critical, core process applications that see the benefit for active RFID but not at current prices. Reader manufacturers will increasingly focus on the out of box experience as a way to better differentiate and align themselves with the end users requirements and familiarity level. Not only will they provide devices that do not require significant technical expertise to install, maintain, and upgrade, but they will also continue to design units with smaller footprints, more connectivity options, and improved aesthetics.
