According to the report “CSR Flash Memory Cards and
Readers” distributed by Bharat Book Bureau, the global
shipments of flash memory cards are skyrocketing. This is
primarily due to the decline in the component costs and
procurement of new applications for mobiles and digital
cameras. (http://www.bharatbook.com/bookdetail.asp?bookid=7782&publisher=)
The report estimates that Greater China’s exports of flash
memory cards and readers reached to about US $ 1.4 billion
in the year 2006, the growth rate being almost 60%. This
momentum is expected to continue as more makers expand their
production capacities to serve the emerging markets.
Mirroring this ongoing trend, the shipments of flash memory
card readers have also been gaining momentum. Also, due to
the low technology of card reader production, many existing
computer accessory makers have been jumping onto the
bandwagon.
The makers in China produce a wide range of flash memory
cards like MultiMedia Cards(MMCs), Compact Flash(CF), Secure
Digital (SDP), Memory Stick (MS), SmartMedia(SM), MicroDrive,
etc and their variants.
It is estimated that in the year 2007, the makers will focus
their research and development on increasing their storage
capacity, lowering power consumption and enhancing the data
transfer rate.
The report suggests that mainland
China’s
projected 2006 shipments of flash memory cards and card
readers are higher than the 2005 shipments by fifty percent
and twenty percent respectively.
The developed markets in
North
America and Western Europe import most of these products. In
fact, flash memory cards and card reader makers are slowly
turning into emerging markets in Southeast Asia and East
Asia.
