What
framework does Country Risk Service use
for
analysing
a country?
• Overall
country risk rating—a
quantitative assessment of the risk of
financial exposure in each country. It includes individual ratings
of political risk, economic policy risk, economic structure
risk and liquidity risk.
• Political
risk outlook—analysis
of the threat to political stability
from war, social unrest, political violence, regime changes,
institutional ineffectiveness, corruption, crime and other
key political factors.
• Economic
outlook—analysis
of the state of government finances,
economic growth and domestic financial indicators (money
supply, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates).
• External
finance and credit risk—analysis
of a country’s external financial
position, including the current account, external
borrowing, debt-servicing requirements and foreignexchange reserves.
• Specific
investment risk ratings—assessment
of the risk of investing in particular
types of financial instruments, namely currency
risk, sovereign debt risk and banking-sector risk.
• Two-year
forecasts—all
variables discussed in the report are projected
to a two-year forecasting horizon and displayed in easy-to-read
tables.
• Statistical
appendices—a
complete, rigorous and up-to-date presentation
of nearly 180 economic variables used in every report’s
risk analysis. It provides a consistent seven-year historical
and forecast data sequence plus historical
quarterly data.

How
we produce Country
Risk Service
• Who
writes the Country Risk Service reports?
Country
Risk Service reports
are written by our team of inhouse analysts
who are responsible for tracking a very small number
of countries. This allows them to pay frequent visits to the
countries they cover and specialise in each country’s economics
and politics. Supplementing this expertise is the Economist
Intelligence Unit’s unique network of contributors, based
in-country. Every report undergoes a rigorous checking procedure
to ensure factual accuracy and the highest standards
of forecasting.
• What
data sources are used?
All
are international or national sources judged by our analysts
as the most reliable currently available. The handbook accompanying
each report lists the standard source for each statistic,
and accompanying notes at the end of each report indicate
when an analyst has used an alternative source. The forecasts
are uniquely our own.
How we compare with the ratings agencies
Unlike
the ratings agencies, we update our risk assessments every month.
The result: we catch deteriorating or improving trends often
before the ratings agencies issue formal warnings. Our
analysts are country experts and typically cover just two or three
countries in a region; by contrast, a single employee at the ratings
agencies will cover many more countries. As
part of the well-respected Economist Group, we provide ratings
and analysis that is totally independent—we
are not compensated by governments for
our country ratings, unlike the ratings agencies.
The
Risk
Ratings Review
Every
month we produce a comparative summary of risk ratings for all
100 countries. The Risk Ratings
Review helps you to spot global
trends and identify countries whose risk profiles are changing.
The Risk
Ratings Review is the ideal
complement to your individual country subscriptions.
The
Risk Ratings Review includes
…
• Comparative
tables—listing
of risk ratings for all 100 countries,
including a full breakdown of each score.
• Global
and regional analysis—what
this month’s ratings reveal about
international and region-wide patterns of risk.
• Up-to-date
ratings focus—an
explanation of why risk ratings have
changed.
• Watchlist—early
warnings of countries likely to deteriorate or improve
over the next six months.
