ARTbibliographies Modern (ABM)

Discusses the work of the South African artist Gary
Schneider (b.1954). The author comments on works
such as Genetic Self-Portraits, details a recent
portrait project with reference to works such as
Ellen (2004; col. illus.), Terell (2004; col.
illus.), and Jeanne (2004; col. illus.), and
considers the influence of the American photographer
Peter Hujar and compares his work to that by Julia
Margaret Cameron. He comments on his response to the
AIDS epidemic with reference to the exhibition From
Desire: A Queer Diary (1991), highlights techniques
used in his nude photographs, and relates his work
to representations of the body by artists such as
the painter Hyman Bloom. |
