The ATLA Religion Database is the premier index to
journal articles, book reviews, and collections of
essays in all scholarly fields of religion. Indexing
journal articles, book reviews, and collections of
essays in more than 60 languages, the ATLA Religion
Database includes more than 460,000 article citations
from over 1,500 journals, 651 of which are currently
indexed. It also provides bibliographic coverage of
over 260,000 essay citations from more than 15,400
multi-author works, and more than 423,000 book
reviews, and an increasing number of multimedia
citations.
Journals are selected
for inclusion according to their scholarly merit and
scope. Journals representing all the major religious
faiths, major denominations, and numerous language
groups are included. ATLA's indexing of multi-author
works, such as Festschriften and conference
proceedings, is unique among religion databases.
Unlike indexes that catalog books of essays as a
single entry, ATLA indexes the individual essays in
each such work.
CSA's ATLA Religion
Database may be used as an Open URL source and ATLA's
version of ATLAS may be linked to as an Open URL
target as a means of linking between the full citation
database and the corresponding ATLAS electronic
journals. Information on ATLA's version
Of
the more than 1.3 million records in the
database only approximately 27,500 records
(added to the database from 1975 to 1985) have
an abstract. It is therefore not recommended
that you search this field because you would be
limiting your search to just these records
instead of to the entire database.
Author, AU=
Author, editor and reviewer names are in this
field. Names display with last name first,
followed by first name(s) or/and initials, eg:
Howe, Frederic R
Lang, U M
Horrell, David G
[Editor]
If the name you are looking for is unusual,
searching for the last name only may be
sufficient, eg: au=horrell
Because you do not know how an author's name may
be entered in the database, click the Browse
Indexes button in the lower left margin and
choose to browse the Author Index. This is an
alphabetical listing of all the names that occur
in this field throughout the database and it
allows you firstly, to see all the spelling
variations, and secondly, to select the names
that you wish to search, eg:
horrall sarah m
horrel muriel
horrell david
horrell david g
horrell j scott
horrell john scott
horridge glenn k
Browse through the list and mark the box
beside the name(s) in which you are
interested. Then click the search button in
the left margin.
ISBN, IB=
All
ISBNs (International Standard Book Number) are
entered in the database without punctuation, so
to search for a particular ISBN, remove all
punctuation and enter all characters without any
spaces, eg: ib=3525825021
Journal Coverage (in ATLAS), JC=
This field appears in serial records for the
fulltext journals that are included in
ATLAS. It indicates the
range in volume, issue and publication years for
each journal that is available electronically.
Several publishers delay the availability of the
electronic version and this lag time between the
most current print issue and the corresponding
electronic issue is noted in months in this
field, eg:
JC: Journal
Coverage
Vol. 1, no. 1
(1992)- Excludes current 36 mo.
Keywords, KW=
A
Keywords search allows you to perform a good
subject search because it looks in multiple
fields that contain subject-specific words and
index terms. In the ATLA Religion Database a
search of the Keywords field includes the Title
(TI=) and the Descriptors (DE=) fields and also
the Abstract (AB=) field for the less than 1% of
records that have an abstract.
Linking Record, LK=
This contains a hyperlinked ATLA Accession
Number for a record that may contain more
information about the source document. This
information is most useful if the record you are
viewing is an essay, because the hyperlink goes
to a record with all the details about the book
in which the essay appeared. For articles and
reviews, the hyperlink is to a record providing
data about the specific journal issue, which in
turn has a much more useful link to publication
details about the source journal or serial. This
latter information can be extremely useful to
librarians because it includes journal name
changes (Preceding Journal, Succeeding Journal);
Publisher; Frequency of publication; when the
journal began (Journal Enumeration), and for a
journal that is part of the ATLA Serials (ATLAS)
fulltext collection, when that coverage began.

indexed in the ATLA Religion Database)
More specific, genre

record where pt=review, the Title field contains
the name of the work that is reviewed; the
Author field lists the reviewer, and the Related
Work, RW= field, contains the complete citation
of the work that is reviewed.
Related Work, RW=
This field contains a citation and a link to the
corresponding ATLA record for a book, article,
review or essay that is related to the
information in that record. For example, if the
record you are looking at is a book review, the
information in RW lists the full citation for
the book, eg:
RW: Related Work
Review of:
Burtness, James H. Consequences. ix, 173 p.
Minneapolis :
Fortress Pr,
1999. ISBN: 0800630920. Related record:
ATLA0000014449
Click on the
hyperlinked ATLA Accession Number to find more
information about the related work. To find all
records that mention the same related work, eg,
to find all reviews of the same book, perform an
RW= search on the ATLA Accession Number, thus:
rw=atla0000014449
