Abstract
The purpose of the article is to assess the
contemporary significance of Kant's epistemology.
The first section gives a broad overview of the
reception and critique of Kant's theory of
knowledge over the last decades. The second
section then shows that Kant's concept of
knowledge as cooperation of sensation and
understanding is of particular interest for
contemporary theories of perception, as W. Sellars
has demonstrated in his critique of traditional
empiricism. The third section explains, how J.
McDowell takes up Sellars's critique and develops
an essentially Kantian conception of knowledge.
This conception is able to outline a solution of
one of the central problems of contemporary
epistemological discussion, the problem of the
normative constraint of the world on the human
mind. In this respect Kant's epistemology is of
great significance to contemporary philosophy. |
