RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, a comprehensive, ongoing guide to publications on music from all over the world, is an indispensable tool for scholars, students, librarians, performers, teachers, and music lovers. It provides broad yet detailed coverage and facilitates both focused research and browsing for readers of all levels. From hip hop to Händel, from ethnomusicology to music therapy, from elementary music education to advanced music theory, RILM is the first stop for the researcher who wants clear, verified bibliographic information, fully cited, abstracted, and indexed. Since its first publication in 1967 RILM has been a mighty ally for music researchers, and its capabilities and coverage have been constantly expanding. RILM currently contains over 400,000 entries; approximately 30,000 new records are added every year, covering all document types: articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, dissertations, Festschriften, iconographies, critical commentaries to complete works, ethnographic recordings, conference proceedings, electronic resources, reviews, and more. Bring the full force of RILM's international database and powerful search techniques to bear on your music research projects.

RILM was established in 1966 under the joint sponsorship of the International Musicological Society and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centres. The publication of RILM is made possible by the efforts of some 60 national committees located in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. The committees are composed of musicologists and librarians based at major university or national libraries and research institutes. Among the current host institutions are the British Library, the Russian State Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Bibliothèque Royale (Brussels), the National Library of Canada, and the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung, Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin).

Explores Beethoven's allusion to Shakespeare's "Tempest" in reference to the piano sonatas in D minor, op. 31, no. 2, and F minor, op. 57. Beethoven may have had in mind the fraternal strife between Prospero and Antonio, which in many respects paralleled difficulties regarding business matters between Beethoven and his brother Karl. See RILM 1989-3439 for an earlier version. [Abstractor: Robison, Brian]

    Abstract, AB=
The abstract may contain links to referenced RILM records. For example,
    AB: Abstract

The following contributions are cited separately in this volume of RILM: Patricia Shehan CAMPBELL, "Music education in a time of cultural transformation" (RILM 2002-2153); Michael L. MARK, "A dynamic half century for music education" (RILM 2002-2151) and "A history of music education advocacy" (RILM 2002-2156); Marie MCCARTHY and J. Author, AU=
Author, editor, reviewer, musical group, and other names are in this field. Names display with last name first, followed by first name(s) or/and initials, eg:
    Moll, Kevin N
Saunders, Frederick A; Hutchins, Carleen Maley
    Anderson, Jack; Lido, Serge [photography]
    Avedon, Richard [photography]; Beatles [group]

If the name you are looking for is unusual, searching for the last name only may be sufficient, eg: au=smith
Because you do not know how an author's name may be entered in the database, click the Browse Indexes button in the lower left margin and choose to browse the Author Index. This is an alphabetical listing of all the names that occur in this field throughout the database and it allows you firstly, to see all the spelling variations, and secondly, to select the names that you wish to search, eg:

    smit ria
    smit sytze
    smith a william
    smith ada

    smith adam
    smith adrian
    smith alan

Browse through the list and mark the box beside the name(s) in which you are interested. Then click the search button in the left margin.

    ISBN, IB=
All ISBNs (International Standard Book Number) are entered in the database without punctuation, so to search for a particular ISBN, remove all punctuation and enter all characters without any spaces, eg:
    ib=(1561592846)
    ISMN, IM=
All ISMNs (International Standard Music Number) are entered in the database with punctuation, eg: im=(M-706705-12-5)
    Keywords, kW=
A Keywords search allows you to perform a good subject search because it looks in multiple fields that contain subject-specific words and index terms. In the RILM Abstracts Database a search of the Keywords field includes the Title (TI=) and the Descriptors (DE=) fields and also the Abstract (AB=) fields.
    Language, LA=
This field will contain the language of the actual article and the language the article was translated from. The translated language will be noted by having "translated from" in parenthesis listed beside the language. Also, the article may have multiple languages listed, e.g., Spanish; English; Italian (translated from).

Boolean operators can be used to exclude the translated languages from a language field search. For instance, if you wanted to search for items in English excluding items that were translated from English, you may develop your search as follows: la=english not la=(english (translated from))

You can also combine searches with the Summary Language (SL=) tag to limit results. For example, if you wanted an item written in French containing a French summary, you could develop your search as follows: la=(french) and sl=(french (summary)).

    Publication Type, PT=
Both the two letter code and the full name are contained within this field. The two letter code may be used to search for a particular publication type, eg, pt=(ap)

If you do not know all available publication types or their two letter codes, click the Browse Indexes button in the lower left margin and choose to browse the Publication Type Index. This is an alphabetical listing of all the full names and two letter codes that occur in this field throughout the database.

Browse through the list and mark the box beside the name(s) in which you are interested. Then click the search button in the left margin.

    Resource Location, RL=
This field hyperlinks to a URL referenced in the database. In RILM this is almost always the full text of the item referenced. When you click on the highlighted URL in the RL field, the linked page will be displayed within an IDS page. To return to the IDS interface, simply click on the 'Return to Results' link located in the banner at the top of the screen.
    Report Number, RP=
This field contains the UMI Dissertation Abstracts number. We precede each number with "UMI Order Number(s):". Multiple Dissertation Abstracts numbers will be included in one field separated with a semicolon.

You may search individual numbers as follows: rp=(DA8924211)

    Related Work, RW=
This field contains a link to the corresponding RILM record for a book, article, review or essay that is related to the information in that record. In non-review records the link will be preceded by the term "Related Record: RILM" followed by the RILM number, eg, Related Record: RILM 2002-1767. In review records, the link will be preceded by the the term "Review of RILM" followed by the RILM number, eg, Review of RILM 1998-8156-bm.
    Summary Language, SL=
This contains both the language of the summary written with the work and the language of the abstract. When the language indicates a summary, it will have the term "summary" in parenthesis listed beside the language. When the language indicates the language of the abstract, it will have the term "abstract" in parenthesis listed beside the language. Multiple summary languages may appear in the field. Both the summary language(s) and the language of the abstract can appear together. An example is as follows,
French (summary); English (summary); English (abstract)

Boolean operators can be used to distinguish between summary languages when performing searches. For instance, if you were looking for a record that had a summary written in German, but not with an abstract in German, you could formulate a search string as follows: SL=(german (summary)) not SL=(german (abstract)).

You can also combine searches with the Language (LA=) tag to limit results. For example, if you wanted to search for items in French with abstracts written in English, you could formulate a search string as follows: (la=(french) not la=(french (translated from))) and SL=(english (abstract)).

    Update, UD=
A numeric code which allows you to search for information added in the latest update. Since RILM is updated monthly, the UD field is stamped in the following format: YYYYMM.

You may perform a search for the latest update by entering the year and the month, e.g.,
    ud=(200203)
