The embedded ac-dc power supply market will grow at a rate of 5.1% in 2009. Fueled by the emergence of LED lighting as a major application area and the introduction of a separate Solid State Lighting Segment (SSL), the embedded ac-dc power supply market is projected to realize immediate growth. In fact, it is expected to continue growing, increasing from $14.8 billion in 2009 to $20.6 billion in 2014, at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8%. The addition of this segment to the embedded ac-dc forecast represents a significant development for the industry, as it presents power supply manufacturers with an opportunity to capture a portion of the anticipated market growth expected this year. As illustrated in the following diagram, without the addition of the $1.9 billion SSL segment to the traditional “core” power supply applications included in this report, the embedded ac-dc power supply market would have been substantially smaller, growing to only $13.2 billion in 2009.

The Worldwide market described in this report covers 38 key applications that use embedded ac-dc power supplies. In an effort to accurately reflect recent updates in consumer preferences, regulation, advancement in technology and migration among wattage categories, a number of changes have been made since the last report. Among the changes are the addition of several new applications and the elimination of others. (Each of these changes is described and discussed in detail in the following section of this report.) The 38 key applications covered in the report are broken down into seven segments: Communications, Computers, Industrial, Solid State Lighting, Medical, Mil/Aero and Consumer. In another significant development, and a major departure from previously observed growth patterns, over the next several years, ac-dc power supplies will represent a faster growth opportunity than board-mounted dc-dc converter modules. Historically, power converter manufacturers have turned to dc-dc converter modules for high growth rates. That will no longer be the case. As a result of a number of factors, ac-dc power supplies now present a better long-term growth opportunity than dc-dc converters. As seen in the following illustration, the growth rate for the embedded ac-dc power supply market is projected to exceed the growth rate for the dc-dc converter modules market over the next several years.

Other factors driving the embedded ac-dc market include evolving power architectures, packaging trends and global standards stressing the need for improvements in energy efficiency. Combined with ongoing developments in advanced components and new markets for ac-dc power, the opportunities for power supply manufacturers should be plentiful. In fact, the unit market for power supplies is projected to grow at a faster pace than the dollar market, increasing from almost 1.3 billion units in 2009 to over 1.9 billion units in 2014, at a CAGR of 9.1%. However, despite the optimistic forecasts generated in this report, the Darnell Group does not expect consistent growth over the next five years. Projected growth will be slower over the first several years of the period and will return to normal within 24 months. The effect of the slowdown on growth will vary by category. Some applications are expected to be seriously impacted; other applications will be only slightly affected, while others are expected to remain unchanged.

While the Communications, Computers and Communications segments clearly dominate the unit market (with over 85.0% of the unit market share over the forecast period), there are a number of opportunities elsewhere. Despite the large unit market, the Consumer segment remains largely captive production, and as a result the three “Cs” of the industry make up a much smaller portion of the dollar market, providing opportunities for manufacturers in other areas of application. As stated earlier, the introduction of the Solid State Lighting market has had a profound effect on the embedded ac-dc power supply market, and led by the Signals and Signs portion of the segment, will see both its unit and dollar market shares increase over the forecast period. Along with the Mil/Aero, Medical and portions of the Consumer segments, SSL will also be one of the few segments not as affected by the current economic short-term slowdown discussed earlier.

As stated above, both Communications and Computers are expected to see substantial growth and to be among the most reliable industries for the power supply market. Driven by Desktops, Blade and Traditional servers and a number of other applications, the computer market will see a mix of both high average selling prices (ASPs) and large commoditized unit sales, resulting in the largest overall dollar market of any application throughout the forecast period. In contrast, the smaller Communications segment will be driven by just four applications, including Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), CATV, Set-top-boxes and PoE, which make up not only a large dollar market, but the largest dollar market share increase over the forecast period.

Despite their small size, both the Medical and Mil/Aero segments are each expected to present opportunities, as they both maintain some of the highest ASPs in this report. On the other hand, the Industrial segment, led by the rapidly falling transportation applications, will remain challenging, and will see the report’s only negative growth rates over the forecast period.
