INTRODUCTION

This report is an update of EGY097A, published in 2012.

Energy harvesting (EH) is a process that captures small amounts of energy from ambient energy sources (e.g., solar power, thermal, wind, and mechanical), accumulating them and storing them for later use. Energy harvesting for the purposes of this report is restricted to non-grid-connected applications and excludes power plants that use sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric sources.

Energy harvesters are interesting examples of a fledgling yet sophisticated manifestation of methodologies governed by well-established and understood technologies. The average age of technologies governing energy-conversion methodologies covered in this report is in the range of a hundred years! However, energy harvesting as a term has gathered currency only in the last decade.
