The global market for medical device coating reached $7.1 billion in 2016 and should reach $7.9 billion in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.2%.

INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

This study examines the medical device coating and surface modification treatment industry, a global enterprise that BCC Research anticipates will approach $8– billion in 2021. It describes and devotes individual chapters to the eight coating and surface treatment technologies that add value to medical devices used in 19 applications, addressing each in an individual chapter. Forecasts for each coating and treatment technology and applications are provided for the United States, the European Union, Other Developed Nations and the Rest of the World.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
In the decade since BCC Research undertook its first comprehensive study of the medical device coatings and surface modification treatment industry the business has steadily grown in response to technological developments. Prospects for growth were further buoyed at the end of the last decade when the world’s largest healthcare market was expanded by the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which mandated individuals purchase health insurance, expanded free healthcare for the poor and provided purchasing assistance for families with modest incomes. Within the past year announced plans to repeal the ACA and remove the United Kingdom from the European Union have introduced obstacles to the growth of the coating industry that were unimaginable when BCC Research most recently examined the business in 2014. Coincidental to those external political developments there have been a growing number of coating–related device recalls. For coating manufacturers, those developments point toward substantially slower growth and, in the case of several applications, no growth above the 2015 demand levels.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
As with earlier editions, this study will be of interest to stakeholders in the medical device industry; the coatings and surface treatments industries; suppliers of alloys, ceramics, polymers, and other materials used in the manufacture of coatings; manufacturers of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and energy sources that can be incorporated into coatings; coating and medical device importers; medical device contract manufacturers; and the regulatory community and healthcare policy analysts. It will also provide useful insights for those exploring investment opportunities in, what despite near–term regulatory and economic uncertainty remains, an industry driven by an ever increasing number of individuals in need of medical services.

SCOPE AND FORMAT
This study looks at medical device coatings and surface treatments from the perspective of both the supply and demand side of the equation: coating manufacturers that supply the materials, the medical device companies that use it and the members of the healthcare community that influence purchases. The study, which contains 100 tables, is organized into 33 chapters, most corresponding to the major types of materials and applications.

Consistent with the scope of the study, the format of this report is arranged to present its five–year forecasts as a series of tables. Each of those tables presents U.S. current dollar demand values for coatings and surface processes for 2015, and the five–year forecast period from 2016 through 2021. Separate sets of forecasts are presented for the:
-Eight types of coatings and surface treatment technologies.
-Nineteen healthcare areas that correspond to FDA medical device review panels.
-Four geographic regions.

TECHNOLOGIES
BCC Research presents forecasts for the eight basic types of coatings plus surface treatment technologies. Coatings are grouped on the basis of their most distinguishing chemical or physical characteristic. Surface treatments are defined as those processes that alter the surface of a device without adding a chemical or physical agent. For example, we characterize chrome plating as a type of alloy coating, rather than a surface treatment. The eight types of technology addressed in this study are:

METHODOLOGY
The contribution of medical devices and device coatings and surface treatments is well established in professional literature. The types of materials and processes used to manufacture medical devices are likewise known from public record filings by those seeking governmental approval to market those devices. In addition, national governments maintain records describing the prevalence of disease and injury rates by age group, and healthcare system delivery characteristics, including physician density, hospitalization rates and healthcare costs. Examining data from those, and other public sources using data–mining techniques, has enabled BCC Research to construct dollar value demand forecasts for 2016 through 2021 for medical device coatings and surface treatments based upon consensus estimates of changes in country populations and their respective economic growth factors. Names for medical devices and their type–of–supplier designations follow preferred USA–FDA terminology.
