Latest Updates and Structural Trends
■ We expect wind and solar capacity to grow by 13.5% and 38.5% in 2016 respectively, with overall nonhydopower renewables generating a 8.24% share of total electricity generation.
■ MidAmerican Energy Company filed a proposal with the Iowa Utilities Board in April 2016 to build an up to 2GW Wind XI power complex in the US state. The company is yet to identify a location for the USD3.6bn scheme.
■ The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) received a lease request from Trident Winds in March 2016 to develop an up to 800MW floating wind power project off the California coast, US. The proposed project will be built offshore Morro Bay and will be installed with 100 units of up to 8MW floating turbines. BOEM will now issue a Federal Register Notice to find out if any other firms are interested in developing projects in the same area. The agency will then launch a competitive or a noncompetitive leasing process for the project, depending on whether any interest is expressed by other firms.
■ In February 2016 the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) voted 5 to 4 to halt the Clean Power Plan's implementation until a pending lawsuit against the plan's legality - presented by more than two dozen states, coal miners and utilities arguing that the EPA overstepped its authority - is set by the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. Oral arguments for the lawsuit are scheduled to be heard on June 2016. The plan was unveiled in August 2015 and aims to reduce emissions from power plants by 32% (based on 2005 levels) by 2030.
■ The multi-year extension of the US government's tax credits in December 2015 for solar and wind power have increased long-term predictability for investors and developers in the sector, rendering the US one of the world's most attractive solar markets in the world and led to a strong ten-year forecast also for the wind sector.
■ In December 2015, Google announced in December 2015 that it signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 842MW of renewable capacity to power its datacentres.
