In a scene that could be described straight out of a comedy movie, the hunt for sweet toothed thief or thieves is under way who stole a trailer full of Nutella and other confectionery on Sunday. The incident occured in Neustadt in Germany. Among other confectionery stolen was another famous treat known as Kinder Surprise Egg, both manufactured by Ferrero SpA.
Ferrero is also famous for it Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Nutella, the hazelnut spread is famous and loved around the world. Used as a spread in breakfasts or just consumed on its own. Kinder is targeted at kids and is much sought after by them, though number of adults liking it are in equal number. The police on August 14 put out an appeal that read :
“Anyone offered large quantities [of chocolate] via unconventional channels should report it to the police immediately.”
The cost of the total confectionery stolen in the heist is believed to be upwards of $ 80,000. Police spokesman Martin Ahlich said that, “It’s not even clear if they were after the sweets or after the trailer – at this point we don’t know what their motive was.” The case becomes even more peculiar considering Nutella and Kinder Surprise Eggs weren’t the only stolen items. Another trailer, this one packed with 30 tons of fruit juice, disappeared from Wittenberg on Saturday.
Theft incidents of food and confectionery aren’t just isolated to Germany though. In Arkansas, America, a similar incident was recorded where an entire truck full of Little Debbie snack cakes were stolen. The German police are on the look out for the thieves. It will be interesting to see what their motives behind these unusual thefts were.
