Consumption of polymers and other primary plastics and synthetic rubber in India grows 15% per year over 2007-2012 to reach Rs 860 billion. Plastic processing industry accounts for 32% of domestic sales, followed by rubber manufacturers with 19%. Market increasingly dominated by importers, which capture more than 60% of sales in 2012, up from 31% in 2007. Domestic industry generated Rs 763 billion earnings in 2012, representing 10% annual expansion since 2007. May 2013 sees Indian Government increase customs duty on polymers from 5% to 7.5% in response to industry’s longstanding demands.
