BMI View: Russia's two bellwethers, the port of St Petersburg, the country's main box facility, and the port of Novorossiysk, one of Russia's largest ports in terms of total throughout, will be hit hard as a result of the Russian economy's forecast sharp contraction in 2015, as we continue to forecast a decline of 5.2% for the country's economy during the year.

Although, despite the recent depreciation of rouble, we expect Russia's consumer story to remain attractive over the medium term, helping container throughput growth at the country's ports, prolonged lower oil prices during 2015 will have a negative impact on economic activity. High inflation will negatively affect consumer's purchasing power resulting in a reduction in private consumption.

The tonnage and container throughput at both ports are expected to contract in 2015. Over the rest of the medium term we project growth, albeit moderate, to return at the ports, in line with the country's macroeconomic outlook.

Headline Industry Data
2015 port of St Petersburg tonnage throughput forecast to decrease by 7%, over the medium term we project a 0.3% decrease.
2015 port of St Petersburg container throughput forecast to decrease by 19%, over the medium term we project a 9% decrease.
2015 total trade growth forecast at -12.5%.

Key Industry Trends
Maersk Boosts Novorossiysk With Direct Call: The port of Novorossiysk has received further boost in 2015, becoming part of Maersk Line's direct service from the Asia-Pacific. The world's largest container shipping company has launched the AE3 service from the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region to Novorossiysk in March 2015. According to the CEO of Maersk Russia, Tom Hyldelund, the new service linking Japan (Yokohama and Nagoya), South Korea (Busan), China (Shanghai, Ningbo and Yantian), Singapore and Russia (Novorossiysk) is in response to the liner's clients' demands.
