BMI View: We expect healthy growth across Thailand's maritime shipping sector
in 2015. While challenges from the volatile political situation - following the
establishment of a military government in May 2014 - persist, the government has
introduced a range of measures which should help boost the economy and reassure
investors. Externally, the market for Thai exports is looking stronger, and
continued investment into the maritime facilities will see growth continue over
the longer term.
Headline Industry Data
Gross tonnage at Laem Chabang, the country's largest port, is set to rise by
6.1% to 76.61mn tonnes in 2015, and will average growth of 6.5% a year over our
medium-term forecast period to 2019.
Box handling at the same port will rise 7.5% to 7.08mn twenty-foot equivalent
units (TEUs) in 2015, and will grow by an average of 6.4% over the medium term.
At the port of Bangkok, BMI projects that tonnage will grow by 6.4% in 2015, to
22.82mn tonnes, with container handling set to grow by 6.1%, to 1.63mn TEUs.
We expect the real value of foreign trade to grow by 0.1% in 2015.
Key Industry Trends
Myanmar Connection Will Support Trade Growth: In April, Thai shipping firm
Regional Container Lines (RCL) announced that it had linked up one of its
Thailand-Singapore services with a Singapore-Yangon service, thereby meaning
that it offers a direct service between Thailand and Myanmar. The service
launched on April 29, with the Xetha Bhum arriving in Yangon on May 3. The new
service will support growing trade between Thailand and its rapidly developing
neighbour. RCL president, Sumate Tanthuwanit, said of the launch: 'There has
traditionally being strong trading links between Thailand and Myanmar. Current
imports to Myanmar from Thailand will in fact rank amongst the top 3 countries
in Asia in container terms.'
