BMI View : Hungary's freight transport sector will grow strongly in 2015 as the country's economic growth continues to quicken, with private consumption adding a lot to this growth. Road freight growth will outperform the other modes as the sector will continue to dominate the majority of trade, and as consumer demand increases. Over the longer term, however, there is significant potential for the rail sector to increase at a faster pace than road, due to large investment projects such as the Silk Road programme.

Hungarian trade will grow much more strongly over the coming years relative to the previous several. Economic growth will be strong over 2015 and several years beyond, driven by private consumption growth which will fuel import growth. A better economic picture in Europe will benefit regional trade.

The freight sector in Hungary is dominated by road haulage, which we expect to remain the case over the coming years. Strong GDP growth in the country and an improving economic outlook in Europe will drive road freight growth, though this will remain lower over the coming years than pre-financial crisis.

Though road freight will outpace that of rail in the medium term, we believe that this will reverse in the longer term as investment projects are concentrating into the rail sector. The potential Silk Road project, which will connect Hungary with China, adds major upside potential to our forecasts.

Hungary's aviation sector is underdeveloped in terms of freight traffic and will continue to be so as freight investment is entering more into the road and rail networks. However, pockets of growth will come from export-led industries such as the IT and life sciences sectors.

We forecast total road freight volumes will rise by 2.6% year-on-year over 2015 to reach 179.3mn tonnes.
We forecast total rail freight volumes will rise by 1.3% year-on-year over 2015 to reach 48.7mn tonnes.
