Water quality and water scarcity remain to two main issues in this water stressed country,
whose two biggest industries are agriculture and mining - two of the largest water consuming sectors.
Moreover, both sectors contribute to water pollution. However change is in the air with potential new water
rights allocations legislation and a redefining of glaciers which could inhibit the mining sector but provide
more water for domestic users and small farmers.
Chile has one of the most active water sectors in the world, driven by a dearth of naturally occurring
freshwater and a vast wealth of mineral resources, attracting heavily water dependant mining companies
whose industrial requirements are putting an increasingly intense pressure on Chile's underdeveloped and
over-subscribed water services. This has led the mining companies to invest heavily in the country's water
infrastructure, particularly with regards to desalination plants, distribution networks, and water treatment
facilities. We expect these trends to continue in the long term.
