View: The ongoing widespread water pollution issues, in conjunction with the rising threat of long term water shortages due to rapid population growth, means that a vast amount of investment is needed in the water sector to expand and modernise the water wastewater and sanitation infrastructure. This will open up numerous opportunities to water management and water infrastructure groupsOver the long term, extreme water shortages may threaten the government's plans to shift a large part of its power generating capacity to hydropower. In an effort to offset such potential problems, the government, in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has worked to initiate water projects all over the country, in order to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place and to cater for rising demand. The Ministry of Environmental Protection also announced in September 2013 that the Chinese government will increase the allocation for prevention and control of water pollution in major drainage areas to CNY500bn between 2011 and 2015, up from CNY300bn between 2006 and 2010.
