View: Kazakhstan's water sector is facing an uphill struggle; ageing infrastructure, corruption and a reliance on neighbours for resources lends little credibility to the country. However, significant investment isbeing poured into the industry, both by the government and by the European Bank for Reconstruction andDevelopment, suggestinglight at the end of the tunnel. Seventeen hydropower projects are anticipated to come online by 2020, and the country's Clean Water programme suggests that Kazakhstan is serious about solving its water issues. We remain sanguine towards Kazakhstan's economy in the years ahead as production starts at the Kashagan oil field, and Chinese investment bolsters government infrastructure development plans. However, with the tenge continuing its depreciatory trend, and household expenditure increasing rapidly, we could see inflationary pressures come to the fore once again. This would spell negative implications for the water sector asmuch needed investment, already in short supply, tapers off even further and improvements remain negligible. For now, investment is still flowing in as thegovernment seeks to fulfil its clean water programme pledge. The country is to invest over US$206mnh in its water sector over 2014. The projects will focus on improving the quality of the water supplyand distribution in various provinces, including Karagandy, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan,West Kazakhstan, Atyrau and Jambylc. Works have already started in some provinces. We believe this is anextremely positive step for the country and the sector, and shows that the ongoing economic improvementsare filtering down as government spending stabilises.
