Zero Net Energy (ZNE) buildings consume only as much energy as they generate within one year. They are the next target for green building construction and renovation in the near future.

There is great concern for reducing the carbon footprint in the U.S., but low-cost fossil fuel-based energy is making it difficult to justify ZNE investments, especially since a portion of the funding must to be tied to more-expensive renewable energy sources. For this reason, the economic drivers for ZNE and the fastest developing markets will be in Europe, where high costs and low availability for conventional energy sources are driving renewable energy spending.

Additionally, regulatory requirements to drive down energy costs are coming into effect in numerous countries beginning in 2016, which will provide additional incentives. Finally, it is economics rather than the technology governing ZNE’s momentum. Numerous advances in building efficiency, renewable energy generation and capture technology have been made over the last decade, making ZNE readily achievable for business and residential buildings in both new and existing constructions.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
The business opportunity represented by ZNE for commercial buildings will total more the $239 million by 2018. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of ZNE investments will be greater than 50%. The market is at an early stage, but ZNE has become the focus of the green building industry and regulators in most major geographic markets, especially in Europe. In addition, mega-city developments in Asia are providing new showcases for ZNE construction and architectural creativity. In short, the combination of the ongoing quest for energy efficiency, modern building design objectives and government awareness of the future depletion of energy resources are making ZNE buildings a fruitful investment area.
