BMI View: Our outlook for the Greek food and drink industry will improve throughout our forecast period to 2020, but this will reflect a stabilisation rather than a full-blown recovery. Households will remain highly price-conscious, which will favour beer in the alcoholic drinks sector and the development of the discount segment.

■ Following five years of contraction, the food industry will benefit from improving macroeconomic conditions and modest gains in household spending. Nonetheless, we caution that Greek households will remain highly price-conscious.
■ Beer will be the best performing in the alcoholic drinks, thanks to its affordability. Nonetheless, market leaders Athenian Brewery and Mythos Brewery will be under greater scrutiny from anti-trust authorities after Athenian was fined for abuse of dominant position in late 2015.
■ The food retail sector will remain under pressure despite modest improvements in consumer spending, as illustrated by the sale of 33 stores by struggling Marinopoulos in February 2016.
