View: Little has happened in the Slovakian water sector over the past quarter. We attribute this lack ofdevelopment to the moderate pace of the country's economic recovery, and the concomitant decline in theconstruction industry. This will continue to impede the modernisation of the water sector for some time tocome, as without government-led impetus and foreign investment, there is little interest in this moribundsector at present.
The appointment of Robert Fico as Slovakia's Prime Minister in April 2012 made policy trajectory a littleclearer and his party looks set to perform well in the presidential ballot in April 2014. With this in mind, weexpect that confidence will grow in the market and 2014 will see improving construction growth. Slovakia'seconomy showed signs of improvement over the latter stages of 2013, with real GDP growth in Slovakiaregistering 0.9% y-o-y in Q213, beating expectations as private consumption recovers. BMI's Country Riskteam have increased their target for full-year 2013 GDP growth to 0.8% (from a previous 0.6%), rising to2.0% in 2014.
